On visual pathway topography

Schematic perspective represention of the visual pathways as seen from above right, including topographical relationships to the ventricular system and major arterial supplies. Anterior visual pathways are shown in yellow, lateral geniculate bodies in blue, posterior visual pathways in red, visual cortex in green, and ventricular system in pale blue.

Schematic representions of the positions and orientations of the main retinal quadrants (represented by their oblique meridians) in various cross-sections of the visual pathways, as viewed from in front and above. The solid circle and the two solid hemi-circles represent the macular outflow from the right eye.

Schematic represention of visual field topography in the unfolded primary visual cortex on the right. Anterior (and the temporal crescent) is to the left. Note progressively diminishing representations of increasing eccentricities.

Abbreviations: U, upper; L, lower; O, oblique; H, horizontal; V, vertical.

Main arterial supplies of primary visual cortex on the right. Although the branching pattern varies between individuals, occlusions of end branches cause localized infarcts that tend to conform to quadrantic, sectorial, crescentic or scotomatous visual field defect designations.

Abbreviations: PCA, posterior cerebral artery; PTA, posterior temporal artery; POA, parieto-occipital artery; CA, calcarine artery; MCA, branch of middle cerebral artery.
